A shock site is a website that is intended to be offensive or disturbing to its viewers, containing materials of high shock value which is also considered distasteful and crude, and is generally of a pornographic, scatological, or extremely violent nature. Some shock sites display a single picture, animation, or video clip, or a small gallery, and are often passed around via email or disguised in posts to discussion sites as a hoax in an attempt to trick readers into following the link to the website. Other shock sites are merely websites that openly publish shocking material.

Goatse.cx
Goatse.cx<ref>"The Hands of God", snopes.com.</ref> was one of the best-known shock sites that existed, featuring an image, hello.jpg, of a man stretching his anus with his hands.
The original domain goatse.cx was deactivated by the NIC .cx authority in January 2004, but several mirrors sites are currently up and running hosting the original content<ref>Archive.org's archived copy of the pages accessible through the domain goatse.cx before it was pointed to http://www.blackraven.cx/</ref> (including goatse.ch, goatse.fr, goatse.ca as well as goatse.cz which also manages to preserve some of the original phonetic appeal). Tubgirl.com is a redirect to a picture, tubgirl.jpg, containing a masked, naked woman lying in a bathtub, buttocks raised with her legs over her head, projecting a fountain of orange/yellow liquid from her anus onto her face. Before the launch of tubgirl.com, this image was featured in a rotten.com story "Fecal Japan"<ref name=fecaljapan>http://web.archive.org/web/20021004051657/vatican.rotten.com/fecaljapan/</ref> claiming that the subject matter is popular in Japan.
Ogrish.com
Ogrish.com was a shock site that contained pictures of domestic incidents such as car crashes, murders, and various other accidents. It also hosted images from the ongoing Iraq War, other conflicts, and acts of terror. The media hosted on Ogrish.com was, according to the manager of the site Dan Klinker, retrieved by the site's staff, or was submitted freelance by emergency workers and others who had access to such media. Ogrish.com used scripts that monitored jihadist websites for uploads of videos and images, and also crawled the internet for footage. <ref name="Shock and gore"> Harkin , James

Examples of popular material on the site included the decapitation of American contractor Nick Berg, which had been downloaded fifteen million times, the execution of a Russian soldier in Chechnya, and the murder of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. According to the site, average daily hits ranged in the low hundred thousand, and sometimes rose to 750,000 on a "bad news" day. <ref name="Shock and gore"/>
Ogrish.com was incorporated into LiveLeak.com on Oct 31st 2006.

2girls1cup.com is a famous shock site/viral video of two women performing—both separately and together—a number of scat acts, including defecating into a cup, consuming the resulting fecal matter, and then vomiting into one another's mouths. The site has garnered a great deal of attention on internet forums and video sites, spawning various reaction videos and parodies such as songs and animated versions.<ref name="vh1" /><ref>Things you can't un-see: the very worst of the internet, Sheena Quashie, Rutgers Observer, 11/13/2007</ref> Among these is a video showing comedian Joe Rogan's reaction to the clip<ref>[1]</ref> and a parody video featuring John Mayer<ref>[2]</ref>. The video was also brought up in an episode of VH1's Best Week Ever<ref name="vh1">The Best Week Ever, VH1.</ref>.
Other shock sites
- One item on Rotten.com contains an image of a Scarlet Macaw perched on a man's erect penis. The page contains a note from a Slashdot reader asking that the image be relocated (if not removed) because Slashdot trolls are using hyperlinks to send unsuspecting users there.<ref>Letter from Slashdot.org, (along with the picture).</ref> The page also mentions a crude ASCII art version, which appears from time to time on Slashdot.
- CharonBoat.com is a shock site with a slogan "Showing Beyond" featuring the images of accidents and gruesome historical events and operated by the European company Showing Beyond Ltd. CharonBoat.com was founded by Dutch Haagen at the end of 2006. This web site has been banned in China.<ref> EOL.CN Banning offensive web sites in the People Republic of China.</ref>
Former shock sites
- ShrewsburyCollege.co.uk was a site containing a photograph of two men, one being anally penetrated by the other with what appeared to be a bicycle pump. In addition, both were covered in feces. The name of the site was taken from the Shrewsbury College of Arts & Technology, which used to be known by the acronym SCAT. The website has now been replaced by the actual Shrewsbury College website. This shock site was perhaps the only one to have appeared in a print newspaper, featuring in a front-page article of the Shrewsbury Chronicle on 8 December 2005.[citation needed] In the aforementioned article, the MP for Shrewsbury & Atcham, Daniel Kawczynski, mentioned that the site was brought to his attention by a fellow Member of Parliament.
