Team Arena Master is a gametype designed for Unreal Tournament 2004 by GaimTheory.

The gametype can be compared to the following other gametypes:

  • DM (deathmatch)
  • TDM (Team DeathMatch)
  • LMS (Last Man Standing)

What makes it unique, however, is the way it combines LMS with TDM, together with a round system and health/armor penalties. There are many discussions about the new features after the release of version 3.0, which in eyes of many players destroy the gameplay of the previous versions like 2.57. For example, it isn't possible to configure the ammo-amount for the weapons, also a radar-combo, which a player can use to see his opponents through walls, isn't accepted by the TAM-Community.

Gameplay

Gameplay is round based. When a round starts every player starts with all weapons and a limited amount of ammo. There are no powerups or weapons lying around in the map so you have to make do with what you start out with. All weapons are locked at the beginning of the round, but they are unlocked after 5 seconds.

If you die, you do not respawn but remain dead until the next round. If all players of the opposite team are dead, your team wins the round; if your team is wiped out first, the round goes to the enemy. The first team to win a set amount of rounds, usually 10, wins the game. Individual scores depend on the amount of enemies killed and the amount of damage done to the enemy team. (every 100 health/armour you take from the enemy give you 1 point)

Rounds have a timelimit. If the round's time limit has been reached and both teams still have players left, all players slowly lose health until only one team has players left. If you are left in the game during this overtime period you will have to decide whether there is still an enemy with more health left. If so, the enemy will outlive you unless you manage to kill him before your time runs out. If not, the enemy must damage you before his time runs out.

Because at the start of every round each team begins with renewed health, armour and ammunition, a team that is slightly better than the opposition would have a good chance of winning every single round, gaining a 10-0 map win. To prevent this from happening, the leading team starts out with less health and armour, a concept called "challenge mode". The bigger the score difference, the harder it is to increase it, in most cases making the end score an accurate representation of the difference in performance between the teams.
