Justin Randall Timberlake (né le 31 janvier 1981 à Memphis, Tennessee), est un chanteur pop américain, compositeur, producteur, danseur et acteur. Il a débuté dans le célèbre boy band américain *NSYNC et a gagné 4 Grammy Awards ainsi qu'un Emmy Awards. En 2002, il sort son premier album solo Justified, se vendant à plus de 9 millions d'exemplaires à travers le monde. Son deuxième album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, sort en 2006 avec les singles SexyBack, My Love, What Goes Around et Love Stoned. Avec ses deux albums, Timberlake a vendu plus de 16 millions d'albums dans le monde. Il a créé son propre label Tennman Records, et une ligne de vêtement, William Rast.

Justin Timberlake est né à Memphis, Tennessee, de Randall Timberlake et Lynn (née Bomar). Il appartient à une lignée anglaise. Son grand père paternel, Charles L. Timberlake, mari de Bobbye Joice, était un pasteur baptiste et Timberlake a été éduqué sous l'Église baptiste, même s'il se considère lui même plus « spirituel que religieux », bien que chrétien. Ses parents divorcent en 1985 et chacun se remariera: sa mère, qui travaille alors dans la compagnie de divertissement « Just-in Time Entertainment », se remaria à Paul Harless, un banquier, quand Justin avait 5 ans. Quand à son père, directeur de chorale dans une église baptiste, a eu deux enfants, Jonathan (née en 1993) et Stephen (née en 1998) de son second mariage à Lisa Chwieseni. Sa demi-sœur, Laura, décède brièvement après sa naissance en 1997 et est mentionnée dans une chanson de remerciement de Timberlake « My Angel in Heaven ». Timberlake gandit à Millington, petite ville au nord de Memphis. Sa toute première tentative musicale se fait dans l'émission américaine « Star Search » en tant que « Justin Randall ».

En 1993, il rejoint le Mickey Mouse Club. Il y rencontrera sa future petite copine et superstar de la pop Britney Spears, sa future coéquipière sur le Justified/Tripped Tour Christina Aguilera, et son future partenaire de NSYNC JC Chasez. Quand l'émission prend fin en 1995, Timberlake recrute Chasez pour faire partie du nouveau boys band, managé par Lou Pearlman, ayant déjà recruté Chris Kirkpatrick. Le groupe se fera appeler NSYNC. En 1999, Timberlake joue le rôle de Jason Sharpe dans le téléfilm Model Behavior.

1995–2002: 'N Sync

Timberlake était un membre du très célèbre boys band dans années 1990, 'N Sync, et était considéré comme une idole. Le groupe s'est formé en 1995 et a débuté sa carrière en 1996 en Allemagne et atteint les États-Unis deux ans plus tard en 1998, et finalement lors de la sortie la plus rapide de tout les temps de l'album No Strings Attached en 2000. En 2002, après l'achèvement de leur Celebrity Tour et la sortie de Girlfriend, le troisième single de l'album Celebrity (2001), le groupe décide de faire un break, au quel moment Timberlake commence a travaillé sur son premier album solo. Concernant le management de Lou Pearlman, Timberlake déclare le 24 septembre 2006 dans une interview au magazine Rolling Stone : « J'ai été momentanément trahi », en référence à l'importante quantité que touché (75%) Pearlman sur le boys band.

2002–2004: Justified et Super Bowl

En août 2002, après plusieurs mois d'enregistrement en studio, Timberlake fait le show au MTV Video Music Awards 2002, avec son tout premier single solo, Like I Love You, une musique dance produit par The Neptunes. La chanson atteint la onzième place du Billboard Hot 100. Peu de temps après, Timberlake sort son tout premier album solo, Justified, le 5 novembre 2002. Alors qu'il sort d'une relation de 3 ans avec Britney Spears, l'artiste n'hésite pas à s'inspirer de celle-ci pour écrire des chansons parfois amères sur l'amour (Cry Me A River). L'album est également un grand succès, malgré les ventes considérables que le groupe 'N Sync avait connu. Justified débute également à la deuxième place du Billboard 200 de vente d'album, se vendant à 439 000 exemplaires la première semaine. Finalement, l'album se vendra à plus de 3 millions de copies aux USA et à plus de 7 millions à travers le monde. L'album reçoit également de très bonnes critiques, présenté comme une grande influence R&B, et soutenu par des producteurs de Hip-hop tel que The Neptunes et Timbaland. Justified a tourné sur les ondes tout au long de l'année 2002, et 2003, incluant les singles (classés dans le top 10) "Cry Me A River" et "Rock Your Body".

Timberlake soutient son album avec la tournée Justified/Stripped Tour au côté de Christina Aguilera pendant l'été 2003. Lors de quelques dates, The Black Eyed Peas feront l'ouverture du show; Timberlake apparaît, non crédité, sur le percutant hit "Where Is The Love?", également lors de l'été 2003. Sa société de production ne souhaitant pas créditer Timberlake au hit, de peur de perturber la mise au point des futures chansons de Timberlake, même si ce dernier apparait souvent aux côtés des Black Eyed Peas lors des performances live, dont les MTV Europe Music Awards 2003. En fin d'année, Timberlake enregistre une chanson intitulée "I'm Lovin' It". Elle sera utilisée par la société McDonald's pour leur thème de campagne publicitaire. Le deal entre McDonald's et le chanteur est estimé à 6 millions de dollars.

En février 2004, pendant la mi-temps du 38e Super Bowl, diffusé sur la chaîne américaine CBS, Timberlake fait le show en direct au côté de Janet Jackson sur sa chanson "Rock Your Body" devant plus de 140 millions de téléspectateurs. A la fin du live, Timberlake déchire une partie du costume en cuir de Janet Jackson, alors qu'il chantait au même moment "gonna have you naked by the end of this song" (tu seras nue à la fin de la chanson). Une partie du costume est donc décroché, et le sein de Janet est temporairement dévoilé. Par la suite, Timberlake s'excusera de cette "incident de costume" ("wordrobe malfunction") en disant qu'il était "désolé pour toutes les personnes qui ont été offensées par cet incident lors de la mi-temps du Super Bowl. Ce n'était pas mon intention et je le regrette". Quelques jours plus tard, Timberlake en direct de Los Angeles sur le plateau de KCBS-TV, avoue que même sa propre famille fût offensée par l'évènement. La phrase "wordrobe malfunction" est depuis utilisée dans les médias en référence à un incident, et est entré dans la culture populaire.

Après cette controverse, Justin Timberlake et Janet Jackson seront bannis des Grammy Awards 2004, à moins que ces derniers présentent leurs excuses sur scène lors de l'évènement. Jackson, qui avait déjà fait des excuses publiques déclinera cette solution. Timberlake était donc accompagné d'une lettre d'excuse lorsqu'il reçu l'un de ses deux grammy awards de la soirée (Meilleur album pop: Justified, et meilleur musique pop : Cry Me A River). Au cour de la soirée, Timberlake était également nominé pour l'album de l'année pour Justified, de la musique de l'année pour Cry Me A River et de la meilleur collaboration rap pour Where Is The Love? avec The Black Eyed Peas.

2006–present: FutureSex/LoveSounds

En septembre 2006, Justin Timberlake revient dans les bacs avec un nouvel album qui est déjà considéré comme avant-gardiste, ceci dû aux nombreux mélanges de styles (pop, danse, rap, funk...) que Justin, sous la houlette de Timbaland, n'hésite pas à faire et à son influence musicale principale : Michael Jackson. Le single SexyBack, tiré de cet album, est d'ailleurs son premier numéro 1 au fameux Billboard 200 américain, et est aussi l'une des chansons les plus dansées dans les boîtes de nuits. Cet album est décrit comme étant encore plus mature et amenant à de forts sentiments charnels par ses producteurs. Il compte les chansons phares My Love et What Goes Around. Encore acclamé par la critique, l'album se vend à près d'un million d'exemplaires dans le monde en seulement une semaine et jusqu'à présent demeure le plus vendu de 2006/2007.

Autres projets et anecdotes

  • Lors de son passage à Londres en novembre 2007, pendant sa tournée du FutureSex/LoveShow, Timberlake entre en studio avec Madonna et son producteur préféré Timbaland pour enregistrer plusieurs chansons qui apparaîtront sur le futur album de la reine de la pop en 2008.
  • Justin Timberlake a provoqué un grand scandale avec la chanteuse Janet Jackson, alors qu'il chantaient tout les deux "Rock Your Body" devant plus de 140 millions de téléspectateurs, en lui dévêtant un sein lors de la finale du Superbowl.
  • Dans son clip What goes around comes around l'actrice Scarlett Johansson joue le rôle de sa petite amie qui le trompe. Ce clip est alors un grand succès et on suspecte le jeune Timberlake de côtoyer la belle actrice.
  • Il possède une demi/douzaine de Harley et 9 voitures : 2 Cadillac Escalades, 3 Mercedes, une Porsche, une Audi TT, une Dodge Viper et une BMW 745i.
  • Son sport favori est le golf : Justin y joue plus de 5 heures par jour. IL vient de signer un contrat de 5 ans avec la PGA (l'Association Professionnelle du golf) pour animer des tournois de golf et jouer avec les meilleurs joueurs du monde.
  • Outre sa musique, Justin Timberlake est bien connu pour avoir eu de très belles conquêtes, comme Britney Spears, Alyssa Milano, Fergie, Cameron Diaz et plus récemment Jessica Biel.
  • En 2005, Justin Timberlake et son meilleur ami Trace Ayala ont créé leur propre ligne de vêtement nommée "William Rast". Pour le nom, les deux amis n'hésitent pas : "On a juste pensé aux deux personnes qui ont le plus influencé nos vies, c'est-à-dire nos grands-pères", explique Justin. "William est le nom de mon grand-père et Rast celui du grand-père de Trace. Assemblez-les et voilà...".
  • Le 16 décembre 2006, Justin Timberlake a montré ses qualités humoristiques, lors de la célèbre émission Saturday Night Live, dont il était l'invité d'honneur. Il y a effectué en effet des skeches hilarants mais le public a retenu une parodie de chanteurs de RnB très "lovers" des années 90 intitulée "Dick In A Box". La parodie a tellement marqué que le pseudo single fut diffusé sur beaucoup de radios américaines et britanniques et connu un très grand succès sur Youtube.
  • En novembre 2007, Timberlake entre dans la légende. En effet "Until The End Of Time", sixième extrait de l'album FutureSex/LoveSounds entre dans le Top 40 aux États-Unis. Seul Michael Jackson avait réussi cette performance auparavant, à savoir placer 6 singles d'un même album dans le Top 40. C'est donc une très bonne marque de réussite pour Justin Timberlake.
