This is a list of major villains in the anime and manga series Naruto.

When designing villains, series creator Masashi Kishimoto first devises the character's unique motives and how those motives differ from those of the protagonists.<ref name="Interview">Modèle:Cite book</ref> In some cases, villains are created to take part in a particular fight scene. In these instances, Kishimoto keeps in mind who the character will be fighting when deciding what their unique traits will be so as to keep the battle interesting.<ref name="Sound">Modèle:Cite book</ref> Kishimoto also makes sure that villains stand out, both by giving the character's a sinister face and a costume that catches the reader's eye.<ref name="Interview"/>

Sommaire

Sound Genin

The Sound Genin are entered into the Chunin Exams by Orochimaru under the orders to kill Sasuke Uchiha. In reality, however, they are simply meant to test Sasuke's abilities, with Orochimaru having little concern for what happens to them afterwards.

Dosu Kinuta

Dosu Kinuta (ドス・キヌタ) is equipped with a special speaker implanted into his forearm that serves to dramatically strengthen his sound-based attacks. With his speaker, Dosu can damage an opponent's inner ear, throwing them off balance and making them nauseous. He can also control the sound waves in midair, ensuring that they hit their mark. He appears to be good friends with Zaku Abumi, as Zaku once comes to Dosu's rescue and Dosu later seeks vengeance for Zaku's various defeats. Neither, however, seems to have any special bond with Kin Tsuchi, and as such neither is concerned with her well-being. Dosu is the more level headed of his team, and can adequately gauge an opponent's strengths and weaknesses in little time. After learning that he is being used by Orochimaru, Dosu decides to kill Sasuke Uchiha not under Orochimaru's orders, but rather to prove his worth. When Dosu attempts to kill Gaara to more easily reach this goal, he is killed as a result of Gaara's rage.

Kin Tsuchi

Kin Tsuchi (キン・ツチ) uses bells in battle; by throwing bells attached to needles at her opponent, she can ring them by an attached string. The bells ring at a frequency that directly affects the brain, causing the opponent to see multiple copies of her and making it nearly impossible for them to find the real Kin. With increased exposure to the ringing, an opponent can start losing their motor functions. Neither of Kin's teammates seems to be concerned about her, as both readily attack her when her body is taken over by Ino Yamanaka. After Kin loses in the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exam to Shikamaru Nara, Orochimaru sacrifices her so that he can resurrect the Second Hokage.

Zaku Abumi

Zaku Abumi (ザク・アブミ) lived his early life as an orphan until being found by Orochimaru; in exchange for Zaku's loyalty, Orochimaru gave Zaku power. As such, Zaku is fitted with hollow air tubes that extend through his arms and open through his palms. With these tubes, Zaku can attack others with a combination of air pressure and sound that is strong enough to crack stone and wipe out anything in its path. Throughout the Chunin Exams, Zaku shows little concern for his own safety and does whatever is necessary to complete the task at hand. He is also quick to act without thinking, and doesn't properly weigh the consequences of his actions. After Zaku's preliminary with Shino Aburame leaves him without the use of his arms, Orochimaru sacrifices him so that he can resurrect the First Hokage.

Team Kabuto

Team Kabuto is entered into the Chunin Exams as Konoha ninja to spy on their fellow participants for Orochimaru. The Jonin in charge of their team is never named, nor is his allegiance ever explored. Kabuto seems to operate without Yoroi and Misumi during the exams, as he is rarely seen with them.

Kabuto Yakushi

Modèle:Nihongo is Orochimaru's personal medic, assistant, and general right-hand man. Kabuto was found as a young boy by a chief medical officer of the Konoha Medical Unit Squad. The officer brought Kabuto with him back to Konoha and raised him as a son. Kabuto eventually began acting as a spy for numerous countries and organizations (such as Akatsuki) before coming under the servitude of Orochimaru. Kabuto has since used his various former affiliations as a means to gather intelligence on Orochimaru's behalf, such as entering the Chunin Exams as a Konoha ninja to gather information on his fellow participants for Orochimaru's use. Despite his apparent loyalty to Orochimaru, Kabuto's true personality is difficult to discern; he frequently switches from a lighthearted and polite teenager to a twisted and sadistic maniac that enjoys playing mind games with his opponents. While he generally obeys Orochimaru's orders, he is not above healing Orochimaru's enemies or trying to strike up polite conversations with Naruto Uzumaki when they meet. Orochimaru himself seems to have a hard time determining Kabuto's thoughts, and has suggested that Kabuto secretly works against him.

Kabuto is a talented ninja, being compared to Kakashi Hatake in ability on more than one occasion, as well as being shown capable of killing ANBU members with relative ease. The bulk of Kabuto's fighting ability lies in the medical jutsu taught to him by his adoptive father. These abilities have been further enhanced through his allegiance to Orochimaru, as he has been able to experiment on others to increase his medical knowledge. As a result, Kabuto is able to reactivate dead cells in a concentrated area and grow new ones. While he uses this ability in battle to immediately recover from attacks, it can also be used during his experiments to keep test subjects alive for much longer than is feasible. Kabuto can even temporarily reanimate a corpse for use as an ally or a decoy. During his battle with Tsunade, she remarks that his fighting and healing abilities surpass her own when she was his age. Despite his talents, Kabuto has always served others, a fate he is dissatisfied with. As such, after Orochimaru's defeat, Kabuto integrates his master's remains into his body as a means to become more powerful and to no longer be the mere tool of others. The remains have since begun trying to take over his body.

Misumi Tsurugi

Modèle:Nihongo has had his body surgically altered with the Modèle:Nihongo. This allows him to be more efficient in gathering information and allows him to dislocate his joints to fit into any space. He then controls his softened body with chakra, allowing him to stretch and twist any part of his body at any angle, elongating and even coiling around his opponent. Misumi attempts to use this ability on Kankuro during the Chunin Exams by catching him in an inescapable hold and breaking his neck. While he seems to have succeeded, he in actuality breaks the neck of Kankuro's puppet, which quickly turns the tables and proceeds to break all of Misumi's bones, save the neck. Misumi makes a second appearance with Yoroi Akado during one of the anime's filler arcs, where he is defeated by Ino Yamanaka and crushed under a cave in.

Yoroi Akado

Modèle:Nihongo is able to absorb the physical and spiritual energy of an opponent on contact. He uses this ability against Sasuke Uchiha during the preliminary matches of the Chunin Exams, though Sasuke is able to defeat him with a physical attack not dependent on chakra. Yoroi makes a second appearance with Misumi Tsurugi during one of the anime's filler arcs. He is eventually forced to battle Shino Aburame, at which point he uses Modèle:Nihongo to try and capture Shino in an inescapable torrent of water. He is ultimately defeated and sinks beneath the water.

Sound Four

Modèle:Nihongo are Orochimaru's elite bodyguards. Each has been given a cursed seal by Orochimaru. The Sound Four were forced to accept Kimimaro Kaguya into their ranks for a short time (making them the Sound Five), as he was stronger than all of their combined strength. All of them repeatedly refer to their opponents as "trash". As a group, the Sound Four are able to create a number of different barriers; Modèle:Nihongo, for instance, allows them to create a box-like barrier around them that causes anything that touches it to burst into flames. To prevent themselves from being attacked and thus bringing down the barrier, the Sound Four create the same barrier around themselves.

Jirobo

Modèle:Nihongo is the physically strongest member of the Sound Four, albeit the least powerful, according to the other members. His strength is such that, through simple physical attacks, Jirobo can defeat an opponent in one or two blows. He is even capable of lifting boulder-sized rocks with ease and hurling them across long distances. Jirobo is noticeably fat, though takes offense to this when Tayuya calls him as such and always scolds her for it. Because he is able to absorb the chakra of others, Jirobo often captures opponents so that he can absorb their chakra as a form of sustenance.

Jirobo is drawn into battle with Choji Akimichi during the Sasuke Retrieval arc, who he calls fat near-constantly during their battle. This, as well as Jirobo's insults of Shikamaru Nara, causes Choji to utilize his trump card, drastically increasing his strength. Despite Jirobo's best attempts, Choji's strength outmatches his own and he is killed with a blow to the chest.

Jirobo was the third member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto, a result of Kishimoto's desire to have a large character in the group who was very different from the other members.<ref name="Sound"/>

Kidomaru

Modèle:Nihongo is the spider-like member of the Sound Four; he possesses four extra arms, has the ability to make webs, and even possesses a third eye. This eye (normally covered by his forehead protector) improves the accuracy of his attacks to the point of being unavoidable. Kidomaru's webbing is made of a special type of liquid that is created by infusing body liquid with chakra, making it as strong as steel. The more basic form of this webbing is excreted from his mouth, and he spits it directly from there during combat to capture opponents. Kidomaru can create a stronger, golden webbing called Modèle:Nihongo that hardens upon contact with oxygen to metal-like quality. Because of the solid nature of this webbing, Kidomaru can shape it into armor or weapons to aid him in battle.

Kidomaru is an excellent tactical analyst, making sure each of his attacks is put to use in determining an enemy's weak point. During his battle with Neji Hyuga, for example, he is able to slowly pick up on a blindspot in Neji's defenses, and proceeds to focus his attacks on that point. He generally sees a battle as a game, and often plays around with the opponent too much because he prefers to have fun seeing the opponent struggle. His speech also reflects this-he refers to Neji as a "trash character," and claims that, like all trash characters, Neji will die first. Despite this claim, Neji is able to send a burst of chakra through one of Kidomaru's webs during their battle, immobilizing him. Unable to defend himself, Kidomaru is attacked by Neji and soon dies from his wounds.

Kidomaru was the first member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto.<ref name="Sound"/>

Kimimaro Kaguya

Modèle:Nihongo is the sole survivor of the Kaguya clan. Normally Kimimaro was locked in a cage in the Kaguya compound so much so that he questioned his purpose in life. However the Kaguya clan kept Kimimaro locked up due to his immense combat potential. Kimimaro inherited all of the families bloodline abilities and apparently was the strongest member of his clan even at a young age. Thus he was only let out of his cage for the most difficult battles. After his clan was killed, Kimimaro was found by Orochimaru. Kimimaro proceeds to develop a strong devotion towards Orochimaru, viewing him as the only person who cared for him. In his devotion to Orochimaru, Kimimaro stops at nothing to ensure the continuation of his master's dreams and ambitions. To this effect he willingly kills any who oppose or hinder Orochimaru's progress, and even offers himself as a future host for Orochimaru's soul.

The Kaguya clan's kekkei genkai, Modèle:Nihongo, gives Kimimaro the ability to manipulate his skeletal structure. An example of this ability is seen when Kimimaro fires his finger bones from his hands like bullets. Any injuries the skin receives during the process are instantly healed and replacement bones are created to restore the use of his hands. This ability can be used to sprout bones from any point on his body, giving him a quick defense against physical attacks by covering himself in spikes. Kimimaro can increase the strength of these bones to steel-like quality, a trait he often takes advantage of when using his bones as a sword. Kimimaro has also shown to be a very proficient Taijutsu user, able to predict and avoid almost any physical attack with ease.

Kimimaro's only weakness is a terminal illness that he constantly suffers from, which, in addition to making him unable to battle, makes it impossible for him to act as a host for Orochimaru. When Orochimaru is left in need of a new body, Kimimaro, ignoring his illness, sets out to retrieve a replacement: Sasuke Uchiha. Before he can complete his task, however, he is forced into battle with Rock Lee and Gaara. Just as he is about to kill them both, he succumbs to his illness and dies, unable to fulfill his master's wish.

Sakon and Ukon

Sakon (左近) and the older Ukon (右近) are twin brothers who share positions in the Sound Four. To help distinguish between the two, Sakon wears beads around his neck and Ukon has a somewhat deeper voice. With their kekkei genkai, Sakon and Ukon are able to merge with the bodies of others. Ukon generally uses this ability to remain within Sakon's body where he can bring out some of his body parts to aid Sakon in blocking or attacking. Ukon can separate from Sakon's body so that the two can attack independently, though he is not used to moving on his own and thus tires easily. In addition to combining with each other, Sakon or Ukon can merge with an opponent's body, destroying their cells from the inside to slowly kill them. While within another's body, however, they are vulnerable to whatever injuries befall upon the host, in theory allowing the host to commit suicide to kill either of the brothers. This ability also gives the two regenerative capabilities, and given enough time they can recover from any wound.

Sakon and Ukon both enjoy bad-mouthing the opposition. Orochimaru notes Sakon to be the fastest and strongest member of the Sound Four, traits Sakon is very proud of. When in battle Sakon likes to prolong the fight by toying with the opponent and all the while use unnecessarily powerful techniques. This tendency of Sakon's causes him to slow down the rest of the group whenever he gets interested in an opponent. Ukon is able to counteract this flaw by being more impatient and hasty than his brother, forcing Sakon to quickly end his battles. During the Sasuke Retrieval arc, Sakon and Ukon fight and almost kill Kiba Inuzuka and Akamaru. Before they can finish the two off, however, Kankuro arrives and kills them both with his puppets, saving Kiba and Akamaru.

Sakon was the final member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto. After struggling to decide who Sakon should fight, Kishimoto decided to have Sakon take part in a two-on-two battle. Thus he created Ukon and placed him within Sakon's body so that they could act as one person.<ref name="Sound"/>

Tayuya

Tayuya (多由也) is the only kunoichi in the Sound Four. She is ill-tempered, foul-mouthed (which Jirobo berates her) and a tomboy. Because she has only one weapon, a flute, she avoids close combat at all costs. To help her with this, she can summon three powerful demons known as the Modèle:Nihongo that she controls by playing different tunes on her flute. With precise timing, she can break up the Doki to attack while not leaving any openings for her opponent to counter. In addition to being very fast for their size, the Doki can also open their mouths to release snake-like creatures composed of pure energy. Because of this, the snakes are impossible to hit and can directly attack an opponent's chakra, weakening them over time. If the demons aren't enough to keep opponents at bay, Tayuya can use her flute to cast genjutsu, preoccupying an opponent while she finishes them off with physical attacks.

During the Sasuke Retrieval arc, Tayuya is forced into battle with Shikamaru Nara, whose tactical abilities and intelligence exceed her own. Despite this, Tayuya is able to gain the upperhand through brute force and is almost able to kill Shikamaru. Before she can do so, however, Temari arrives to save him. Temari proceeds to destroy Tayuya's flute and levels the surrounding forest, crushing Tayuya under a pile of debris.

Tayuya was the second member of the Sound Four to be created by Masashi Kishimoto, intended to be the only girl in a group of boys.<ref name="Sound"/>

Gato

Modèle:Nihongo is a powerful shipping magnate whose shipping company is actually a front for smuggling illegal goods and dealing drugs. He takes control of the Land of Waves' shipping routes and creates a monopoly by isolating the country from the outside world, preventing free import and export and turning it into a poor, hunger-stricken country in the process. Gato hires Zabuza Momochi and his subordinates to assassinate Tazuna and stop him from finishing to build a bridge that would allow the Land of Waves' economy to recover. However, after Zabuza is defeated by Kakashi Hatake, Gato assumes that Zabuza is no longer able to accomplish his mission and decides to use his own thugs to kill Tazuna instead. Rather than allow Gato to have his way, Zabuza kills him, freeing the country from Gato's rule and allowing the bridge to be completed.

Haku

Haku (白) was born during a time when people with a kekkei genkai were feared. Because Haku's mother possessed such an ability, so too did Haku. Once Haku's father learned of this he rallied a small mob and had his wife murdered. He would have done the same to Haku, but Haku inadvertently killed both the mob and his father via his kekkei genkai. Orphaned, Haku wandered the country as a beggar child until he was found by Zabuza Momochi. Zabuza took Haku in as a tool of battle and nothing more. For his part, Haku readily accepted this role due to the purpose it gave him, devoting his life to becoming the ultimate weapon for Zabuza. In time, Haku became fiercely protective of his master, so much so that he would not allow anyone to touch Zabuza. He wears dresses and looks like a girl so much that Naruto confused him with a girl when they met prior to their battle. In his devotion to Zabuza, Haku finds purpose in life only by being of use to Zabuza, and does whatever is asked of him to continue to give his own life meaning. When he is defeated by Naruto Uzumaki, Haku feels as though his reason for living is gone as he is no longer of use to his master. His moment of abandonment is short lived, as he is soon able to give up his life to protect Zabuza from Kakashi Hatake's Lightning Blade.

Haku's kekkei genkai, Modèle:Nihongo, allows him to mix wind and water to create ice. Haku's ice is reinforced by chakra, making normally effective methods of melting ice, namely fire, practically useless. Haku's signature attack with this ability is his Modèle:Nihongo, which creates any number of mirrors made of ice to trap opponents. Haku can freely merge with and move between these mirrors, allow him to attack opponents from multiple angle simultaneously. Haku is also skilled with senbon, and can incapacitate or kill a person with a single senbon. Despite these abilities, Haku dislikes needing to kill in his role as a tool, and avoids doing so whenever possible. When forced to face an opponent Haku does all that he can to avoid bringing them great harm, even putting them into a death-like state to prevent them from fighting further.

Hanzo

  • Age: ? (deceased)

Modèle:Nihongo is the former leader of Amegakure whose abilities are renowned and recognized by ninja everywhere. At some point in time he fought with Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade. When they proved able to survive his attacks he rewarded their skills by sparing their lives and giving them the title of the Modèle:Nihongo to indicate that they were the strongest ninja in Konoha. Despite his immense power, Hanzo was very cautious when it came to his own security, and as such getting a chance to see him was a great feat. Sometime later, Hanzo, as well as his family, friends, and affiliates, were killed by Pain, allowing the latter to take control of Amegakure.<ref>Naruto manga chapter 340, pages 10-14</ref>

Madara Uchiha

Main article: Tobi

Modèle:Nihongo founded the Uchiha clan during the early days of Konoha. He did battle with and was defeated by the First Hokage at the Valley of the End. Jiraiya suspects that Madara summoned the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox to attack Konoha years before the start of the series, though the age Madara would have been at the time causes him to question this assumption. Nevertheless, the demon fox seems to be familiar with Madara, comparing Sasuke Uchiha's eyes and chakra to that of Madara's. He is member of Akatsuki named Tobi and he give orders to Pain

Mizuki

Mizuki (ミズキ) is a childhood friend and fellow Ninja Academy instructor of Iruka Umino. At the series' start he tricks Naruto Uzumaki into stealing a scroll of forbidden jutsu, hoping to later steal the scroll from Naruto and use Naruto as a scapegoat in the meantime. Iruka eventually figures out what he's up to and the two are drawn into battle. Using the Shadow Clone Technique he learned from the scroll, Naruto quickly defeats Mizuki as punishment for harming Iruka. The anime fillers reveals that Mizuki, as a former student of Orochimaru, stole the scroll so that he could give it to his master. Mizuki later escapes from his confinements in Konoha to seek out Orochimaru, a task he hopes to make easier by consuming a potion Orochimaru taught to him. While the potion briefly transforms him into a tiger-like beast with doubled speed and power, it ultimately turns him into an angry, shriveled, and powerless old man. Tsunade heals him back to his normal state and interrogates him about the whereabouts of Orochimaru, but learns nothing of any use.

Raiga Kurosuki

Modèle:Nihongo is a former member of Kirigakure's Seven Swordsmen of the Mist, though he apparently disliked all of the other members. As one of the Seven Swordsmen, Raiga wields two spiked swords that he uses in a manner similar to lightning rods to attract and channel lightning and electricity. He can connect them at their hilts to form a larger double-bladed sword, effectively increasing the weapon's size and allowing him to perform different and more powerful attacks. Lightning acts as a power source for him, and so long as he has access to it he can battle continuously. While he was still loyal to Kirigakure, Raiga met Ranmaru, a disabled boy who came to act as additional eyes and ears for Raiga in exchange for being carried upon his back. Ranmaru would become the only person Raiga cared about, despite Ranmaru's pacifist nature and Raiga's love for battle. When Ranmaru acts on his beliefs and tries to convince Raiga to stop fighting, Raiga feels betrayed and, upon being knocked off a cliff by Naruto Uzumaki, kills himself in midair with one of his own bolts of lightning.

Zabuza Momochi

Modèle:Nihongo first gained renown during one of Kirigakure's Academy graduation events, where he singlehandedly killed all of his peers. Zabuza would later become one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist where he acquired his zanbatō. At some point in time, Zabuza found a young boy named Haku wandering the countryside, and offered to take Haku in as his tool. Haku accepted and became loyal to Zabuza, learning from Zabuza and protecting him whenever necessary. Zabuza eventually attempted a coup d'état on Kirigakure by trying to assassinate the Mizukage. The coup failed, forcing Zabuza and his subordinates to leave the country. In the hopes of gaining funds for a second coup, Zabuza becomes a mercenary assassin, killing anyone if the price is right.

Being from Kirigakure, Zabuza excels in water-oriented jutsu, frequently launching large bodies of water at opponents for attack. In addition to the offensive capabilities of his water jutsu, Zabuza is a highly skilled assassin. By blanketing the area in mist, Zabuza can blind an opponent and then locate them by the sounds they make and kill them without their noticing his presence. This talent with assassination is very well-known, as even the ninja of Konohagakure are familiar with Zabuza's history. Despite his abilities, Zabuza repeatedly fails to kill Tazuna, a target given to him by Gato, because of the protection of Kakashi Hatake. After Kakashi leaves Zabuza unable to battle further, Gato revokes their contract and instructs his men to kill Tazuna and Zabuza. Unwilling to let Gato have his way, Zabuza kills him, though is heavily injured in the process and dies of his wounds.
