Thievery is a free, unofficial mod for Unreal Tournament released by Black Cat Games. Thievery integrates the gameplay and style of Thief: The Dark Project and Thief II: The Metal Age with an Unreal Tournament based multi-player and single-player format. A sequel is currently in development for Unreal Tournament 3, titled Nightblade.

Gameplay

Thievery is what is known as a stealth game, or first person sneaker, which is a video game genre in which the player relies more on stealth than sheer brute force, as in first person shooters. Thievery was made to bring this game style to multiplayer, using the stealth game Thief as a reference. Although designed for multi-player, Thievery maps can be played offline; the only difference being that there is only one thief and all the guards are controlled by AI. This is helpful for people new to the game.

Game Styles - The Thief series is entirely made up of single-player games. Thievery is a mod created take the original game features and convert them to a multiplayer setting. Because of this, Thievery has three styles of play. These are "Thieves vs. Guards", "Thief Match" and "Co-op".

  • "Thieves vs. Guards" pits thieves, controlled by humans, and guards, controlled by both humans and AI, against each other. The basic objective of the game is either for the guards to take out all the thieves' lives or for the thieves to gather a certain amount of loot, and sometimes different unique items.
  • "Co-op" is the same as "Thieves vs. Guards" except that all playing humans are thieves, leaving the guard team manned by AI players.
  • "Thief match" is similar to "Co-op" except that all the thieves are pitted against each other for reach objectives, instead of helping each other.

In all three game styles the game pace is much faster than in the original Thief series. "Thieves vs Guards" is the most challenging as players may face human guards who are not as predictable as the AI.

AI - When compared to the AI guards of Thief, the Thievery AI are smarter, faster and more accurate.[citation needed] They can also be commanded by the guard team's human players to patrol certain areas or to stand watch over doors and loot locations.

Items - The thieves are able to access many items that were in the Thief series, such as the flash bomb. Also, other items were added by Black Cat Games that are unique to Thievery, such as the crack arrow. The guards get their own types of equipment such as paralyze and tag bolts for their crossbows. Guards can also have traps such as caltrops, mines and whistlers (security devices) to catch the thieves.
