The Amazing Race 9 was the ninth installment of the popular American reality television show, The Amazing Race. This season featured eleven teams of two with a pre-existing relationship in a race around the world to win one million dollars. Filming ran from November 7, 2005 to December 3, 2005. The show premiered on Tuesday, February 28, 2006 and concluded on May 17, 2006.

On August 27, 2006, Season 9 won a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Reality-Competition Program", the fourth consecutive award for the television series. Producers nominated this season instead of the critically lambasted Family Edition, which was also eligible for the award.

Note 1: Leg 3 was double-length, with two Detours and two Roadblocks, shown over two episodes.
Note 2: Ray & Yolanda had arrived 2nd, but they were assessed a 15 minute penalty for taking a bus instead of a train all the way to the Isthmos Train Station. BJ & Tyler were also assessed the same 15 minute penalty, but it did not affect their placement. Lake & Michelle would have also received the same penalty, but as it didn't affect their placement as last, it was not assessed.
Note 3: It is unknown whether Ray & Yolanda had performed the Roadblock on the final leg before arriving at the Finish Line.

  • Red means the team was eliminated.
  • An underlined Blue means the team was the last to arrive at a pit stop in a non-elimination leg of the race. Teams are forced to give up all their money and belongings, will not receive any money at the beginning of the next leg and are not allowed to collect any money until the leg actually begins for the team.
  • Green ƒ means the team won the Fast Forward clue.
  • A yellow > means that team chose to use the Yield; < indicates the team who received it.

Notable race events

General

  • This race was the first one to start and end at the same location, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, near Denver. Other races have started and ended in the same city (Season 1 in New York City and Season 6 in Chicago), but the location of the start and stop lines have been in different parts of the city.
  • This is the 2nd race (aside from the previous family edition) in which on every leg; at least once the teams had to drive themselves somewhere.

Pre-Race

  • The Amazing Race isn't Tyler's only traveling claim to fame. In 2004, he walked the whole length of Japan to impress his Japanese girlfriend as well as make a documentary about the experience called Kintaro Walks Japan. By the end of the trip, he was often running into many locals who already knew him as "Kintaro" from the TV news.
  • BJ appeared on a campus TV program called "The BJ Show" in honor of himself and co-host BJ Novak. Novak is now a writer/producer/actor on NBC's hit comedy show "The Office".
  • B.J. Averell is also the best friend of Harvard graduate, former band member of North & South, and Top 40 contestant of American Idol (Season 6), Tom Lowe

In-Race

  • When BJ and Tyler offered Phil the dollar they received at the start of the leg that they didn't need, at the pit stop in Moscow, they told him "don't waste that opportunity." This was likely a reference to Phil's Discovery Channel show and book, No Opportunity Wasted.
  • On Leg 4, BJ and Tyler wore "Bowling Mom" t-shirts, in homage to Linda and Karen in Season 5.
  • In Leg 8, Eric and Jeremy questioned the intelligence of BJ & Tyler's choice of Detours by saying that they thought "they were supposed to be smart; didn't they go to Harvard and Stanford?" BJ did graduate from Harvard, but Tyler went to the University of California at Santa Cruz. Eric and Jeremy's comment is quite revealing though, since Tyler achieved some media attention in 1999 for his failed political-style "campaign" to be admitted to Stanford They'll Try Anything - Stanford Alumni Magazine.
  • Although it seemed BJ & Tyler and Joseph & Monica were in a race for who would get to use the Yield in Leg 9, BJ & Tyler revealed on RFF Reality TV Podcast that Joseph & Monica had earlier lost their envelope containing their 'courtesy of' sticker, and thus lost their power to use any future Yields.
  • In The Roadblock of Leg 9, one camera was dropped off of the plane with each racer and another was tied to the parachute.
  • One of the locations that Tyler and BJ delivered to in the Detour for Leg 11 was the offices of GONZO, an anime studio.
  • Leg 11 was a 36 hour Pit Stop. During their time at the Pit Stop, teams were able to go on rides at the amusement park they had just visited[citation needed].
  • Racers may have been given hints to the final Roadblock (involving placing flags of countries visited in sequential order) throughout the race. Footage from Leg 5 shows a clue with the Italian flag printed above the clue information. This and other flag hints may have appeared on other clues.

Post-Race

  • Ray proposed to Yolanda on the CBS Early Show on the morning after the season finale. While it was a total shock to her, Yolanda enthusiastically accepted.
  • Scott (of John & Scott, the first team eliminated) admitted some time after the season finished that he and John are no longer in contact and their "lifelong friends" title was misleading; John is actually a longtime friend of Scott's sister.
  • Dave & Lori are currently engaged.
  • Due to scheduling conflicts with the season finale and the premiere of the film adaptation of The Da Vinci Code, Eric & Jeremy stated that they were unable to attend the premiere of the movie at the Cannes Film Festival, which was their prize for gaining first place on Leg 6. Eric & Jeremy later stated that CBS was going to give them a different prize to make up for it.
  • Joseph and Monica got married.
  • On The Finish Line, Eric announced that he was dating Danielle and had planned to move to New York to be closer to her.
  • Eric and Danielle were selected to race in The Amazing Race All-Stars, and are the only All-Star team that had not previously raced as a team. According to Eric, Dave and Lori were also selected to participate, but were cut at the last minute.
    • Following the All-Stars race, Eric & Danielle said in a post-race interview that they are no longer dating due to the fact they live too far apart, and are now just friends.
  • Tyler apparently planned a controversial walk across Iran with an Iranian-American friend of his to promote world peace, but the idea has not happened at the present time.

Ray and Yolanda had the golden gnome and won.)
  • Leg 11 - Two T-Mobile Sidekicks, each with three years of free service.
  • Leg 12 - $1,000,000

Leg 1 (United States → Brazil)

The first Detour of the Race was Motorhead or Rotorhead. In Motorhead, teams had to travel to a motorcycle shop and assemble a motorcycle, using an assembled motorcycle as a model. In Rotorhead, teams had to travel to an airport and locate one of three buildings in a São Paulo city guide, then travel by helicopter to that building to find a clue hidden within.

Additional Task

  • At the sanctuary, teams must witness a traditional ceremony and they light a white candle for receiving their next clue.

Leg 2 (Brazil)

In the first Roadblock of the race, racers had to climb a fire escape of the Edificio Copan and rappel down the building. The Detour choices were Press It or Climb It. The former required teams to press sugar cane and distill its juice to make 500 mL of ethanol to fuel their cars. In the latter task, each racer used an ascender to climb up a waterfall.

Leg 3 (Brazil → Russia → Germany)

The Roadblock from the first half of the leg required one racer to dive off of a 10-meter diving platform into a pool below and retrieve an underwater clue. The Detour for this half of the leg, Scour or Scrub, had teams search for 10 clues among 1500 Russian nesting dolls, or thoroughly clean a Russian public trolley bus, respectively. The Roadblock from the second half of the leg required one racer to find a Travelocity gnome hidden under giant gnome hats and feet in a field for their next clue. The Detour for the second half of the leg, Break It or Slap It, required teams either to break "stunt bottles" over each others' heads in search of a message printed on the back of the label or learn and perform a local folk dance.

Additional Task

  • At Kilometer 114, teams had to take a zipline from the top of the hill to the bottom.
  • Upon the opening of Mercedes-Benz headquarters, teams choose a Mercedes-Benz vehicle and choose a driver for their thrilling ride on the test track.

Leg 4 (Germany → Italy)

In the Detour for this leg, Foundry or Laundry, teams chose between carrying a 110 lb. iron-cast bell and delivering it to a church or searching through over 2400 articles of laundry for one of sixteen articles of clothing bearing a red and yellow tag. At the Segesta Amphiteater was the first of two Yields in the race. For the Roadblock, teams had to assemble a Greek statue; racers were not told that there were two extra pieces that did not belong.

Leg 5 (Italy)

In the Detour for this leg, teams chose between Big Fish or Little Fish. In Big Fish, each team member must carry a 17-kg swordfish one-third of a mile and deliver them to a specific fish market vendor. In Little Fish, teams must travel by foot to the same fish market and sell 4 kg of a small fish. All teams, except for Fran and Barry, chose "Big Fish". For the Roadblock, one team member must join a game of "kayak polo" and score a goal.

Additional Task

  • At the Amphitheater, teams must count the statue heads on the fence posts that surrounds the ground of the amphitheater. If they correct, they will receive their next clue.

Leg 6 (Italy → Greece)

For this leg's Roadblock, one team member had to complete a 240 foot bungee jump. In the Detour for this leg, teams chose between Herculean Effort or It's All Greek To Me. In Herculean Effort, teams had to compete in three ancient Olympic events (discus throw, javelin throw and wrestling). In It's All Greek To Me, teams had to find nine artifacts with Greek letters, translate them to English letters and unscramble them to form the name of a location on a Greek map. The first of only two Fast Forwards on the Race was to break plates and find a little clue flag that was baked into one plate.

Additional Tasks

  • At the Trevi Fountain, teams must receive one half of Leonardo Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man drawing.
  • At the Spanish Steps, teams must find the other half of the Vitruvian Man drawing. The first team to arrive at the pit stop with the whole drawing wins a prize.

Leg 7 (Greece → Oman)

This leg's Detour was Camel or Watchtower. In Camel, teams had to lift a camel into a pickup truck using a winch, and drive it a short distance to receive their next clue. In Watchtower, teams had to search among three towers for scrolls encased in silver. After they found a scroll, they had to deliver it to a silversmith. The Roadblock was to dig any of 117 sand dunes to find one of 6 shuwas, Omani underground ovens. Inside it was a woven pouch with a meal of lamb, which they would have for dinner.

Leg 8 (Oman → Australia)

The Detour for this leg of the race offered teams the choice of Sand or Sea. In Sand, teams had to drag 40 branches 126 yards to a marked sand dune, an activity known as "brushing the beach," which helps prevent erosion. In Sea, teams searched among 50 underwater crayfish traps for those with live Western rock lobsters; each team member had to retrieve one rock lobster (commonly called crayfish, but they are actually lobsters). This leg's Roadblock involved searching a section of Fremantle Prison for a flashlight and batteries, then searching a network of underground wet and dry tunnels for a clue.

Leg 9 (Australia)

At the airstrip was the second of two Yields hidden on the race. The Roadblock for this leg of the race saw one member of each team doing a tandem skydive. This leg's Detour offered teams the choice of Wet or Dry. In Wet, teams drove six miles to a swimming hole called Buli Rockhole, then hiked and swam one mile down a river infested with "spiders and poisonous plants" to receive their next clue. In Dry, teams drove six miles on-road, then six miles off-road to a rock formation known as The Lost City and selected a didgeridoo. They then had to find an Aboriginal musician with a matching didgeridoo and each team member had to play a note to receive the next clue.

Additional Task

  • Upon the opening of Crocodylus Park, Teams walk through the park and over a wooden bridge where their new friends anxiously await below in the water.

Leg 10 (Australia → Thailand)

The Fast Forward on this leg was to eat a bowl of fried crickets and grasshoppers. The Roadblock required one team member to make a ceremonial feast for monkeys and give it to them. The Detour was Move It or Altar It. In Move It, teams had to transport 72 pots from a pottery shop to a docked boat by balancing them on a board. Altar It required teams to assemble a shrine, including gold leafing a small Buddha statue for the shrine.

Leg 11 (Thailand → Japan)

The Detour was Maiden or Messenger. In Maiden, teams had to transport a young Japanese woman in a traditional Japanese palanquin for 1/3 mile to a tea ceremony pavilion. In Messenger, each person had to construct a foldable bicycle, ride their bikes through the streets of Tokyo, and deliver packages to two separate office buildings. The Roadblock required one team member to ride on three extreme rides in the Fujikyu Highland Amusement Park in the following order: The Pizza, Dodonpa, and Fujiyama. While riding the rides, they had to look for a man holding a sign. Upon completion of their third ride, they had to tell the park manager what was written on the sign to receive their next clue. If they didn't see the sign they would have to go on all three rides again.

Additional Tasks

  • Upon the opening of Royal Kraal, teams must find T-Mobile Sidekick, on the elephant's mouth and where the next clue is display on the phone.
  • At the Shibuya crossing, teams must wait the sign crossing for the next destination which it displays.
  • At Lake Yamanaka, teams must take a swan boat to the and paddle out to the big swan, this pit stop on this race.

BJ and Tyler winning the Amazing Race 9.

In the Detour teams had to choose between Drill It and Deliver It. In Drill It, teams had to drill 10 holes in the ice, push an ice fishing shack to their holes and properly position the shack over at least two of the holes. In Deliver It, teams had to load a bush plane with medical supplies, fly with a pilot over 75 miles to deliver the supplies and fly back. Due to poor weather conditions, Deliver It was subject to an indefinite delay. All teams, by default, decided to Drill It. The Roadblock required one team member to retrieve a flag for each destination country they traveled to during the race, other than the United States, and place the flags in the order which they visited each country. The other team member was allowed to assist but not physically participate. Teams had a reference board with the flags of each destination country and three incorrect flags. After finishing the Roadblock, teams were allowed to run to the finish line.
